How Does a Hydrogen Boiler Work?

Imagine your home heating system as a fireplace. Traditional boilers burn natural gas (which contains carbon) to create heat, but this process releases CO₂ and other pollutants into the air. Hydrogen boilers, on the other hand, burn pure hydrogen, which reacts with oxygen to produce only heat and water – no carbon emissions, no pollution.

  1. Hydrogen Supply: The system receives hydrogen gas from a storage tank or a pipeline network. This hydrogen can be sourced from green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable electricity to split water molecules (H₂O) into hydrogen (H₂) and oxygen (O₂) through a process called electrolysis.
  2. Combustion Process: Inside the boiler, the hydrogen is mixed with oxygen (not regular air) in a controlled way to ensure complete combustion. Unlike natural gas boilers, which mix fuel with atmospheric air (which contains nitrogen and can create pollutants like NOx gases), hydrogen boilers use pure oxygen, making the process much cleaner.
  3. Heat Generation: As hydrogen burns, it releases a large amount of heat, which is used to warm up water in the system. This hot water is then circulated through radiators, underfloor heating, or hot water taps.
  4. Byproduct – Only Water Vapor: Instead of producing harmful emissions like CO₂ or soot, hydrogen combustion only creates water vapor (H₂O), which is released safely into the air.
