Objectives

H2Heat is designated to demonstrate how hydrogen can be produced, transported, and used in a real island setting to decarbonise heat and power for critical public infrastructure. The project combines innovative technologies, strategic partnerships, and system‑level thinking to create a replicable model for clean energy on islands and other remote regions.

1. Green Hydrogen Production

Produce green hydrogen using renewable marine‑based energy and an advanced electrolysis system, showing that clean hydrogen can be generated at meaningful scale in an island environment.

2. Island Hydrogen Infrastructure

Develop the necessary island infrastructure to transport hydrogen safely and efficiently from the production site to end users, addressing one of the key barriers to wider hydrogen adoption.

3. Hospital as Anchor Consumer

Supply the hydrogen produced to a large hospital consumer, demonstrating that hydrogen can reliably support critical public services and enhance energy security in the healthcare sector.

4. Innovative CHP + Heat Pump System

Deploy an innovative combined system that integrates hydrogen‑based combined heat and power (CHP) with heat pump technology, maximising energy efficiency and providing a sustainable solution for high‑demand thermal applications.

5. Cost Reduction Across Value Chain

Reduce costs across the entire hydrogen value chain through technological innovation and process improvements, making green hydrogen a more affordable and competitive option for industrial and public consumers.

6. Partnership for Net‑Zero Healthcare

Partner with the regional health service to support its net‑zero emissions strategy, showing how hydrogen can be embedded in public infrastructure to help meet climate targets in the healthcare system.

7. Hydrogen Valley for Gran Canaria and Beyond

Support the development of a “Hydrogen Valley” on Gran Canaria and other islands, fostering a local hydrogen ecosystem that connects production, distribution, and consumption across multiple sectors.

8. Contribution to EU Climate and Energy Goals

Contribute to broader EU goals on climate protection, energy independence, and sustainable economic growth by demonstrating the technical, economic, and environmental viability of green hydrogen in a real‑world setting.
